Marilyn King is the youngest of six girls and two boys who grew up as a vaudeville family, with the older sisters becoming top stars with Horace Heidt’s orchestra in the 1940s, often teaming up with pioneering guitarist Alvino Rey, who married sister Louise.
As each of the sisters married and started to have children, Marilyn became a full-time “King Sister.” She also continued to pursue a solo career, and enjoyed successful engagements on her own with the bands of Les Brown, Ray Anthony, Freddy Martin, Bill Tole, and Alvino Rey, with whom she also co-starred on an Emmy-winning TV show.
She also studied acting for 12 years with Lee Strasberg, eventually starring in productions of Hello Dolly! and Guys and Dolls. As one of the King Sisters, she can be heard on all of the group’s great Capitol recordings of th 1950s, and in the 1960s helped form the nucleus fo the gargantuan show business phenomenon known as the King Family – in a series of weekly variety shows and specials that showcased several generations of the performing dynasty who took TV and the country by storm.
They also performed in live concerts across the country, and recorded a series of best-selling albums for Warner Brothers Records. Capitol Records recently released a King Sisters compilation in a spotlight series, and a collection of their broadcasts can be heard on a hindsight CD. Most recently Marilyn King has been touring with the Harry James Band and the Paul Smith Trio, headlining such concert shows as “The Fabulous Ladies of Song”, “The Music That Won World War II”, and “Swingin’With The Big Band.”
